Tax planning
Good tax planning happens before 30 June, not when the return is due. We sit down with you before year end, project the result and look at the legal options that fit — for small businesses, companies, trusts, sole traders and property investors.
A planning review before 30 June, using your figures for the year so far.
Anyone whose tax depends on decisions made before 30 June.
Tax planning goes hand in hand with your company tax return and trust tax return. New to running a business? Start with our small business tax guide, or read how the negative gearing and CGT changes affect property investors.
How it works
April to early June is ideal. Meet us at our Sunnybank office (by appointment) or by phone, email and online.
Using your bookkeeping to date, we estimate the year's taxable income and tax for each entity in your group.
You get a short action list with deadlines. After 30 June we prepare and lodge the returns to match the plan.
Good to know
Small businesses with aggregated turnover under $10 million can immediately deduct eligible assets that cost less than $20,000 each. The Government has made the $20,000 threshold permanent from 1 July 2026, and this is now law. The deduction is claimed in the year the asset is first used or installed ready for use — buying it by 30 June is not enough on its own.
The general concessional contributions cap is $32,500 for 2026–27 (it was $30,000 for 2025–26). If your total super balance was under $500,000 on the previous 30 June, you may be able to use unused cap amounts from up to 5 earlier years. Leave time for the fund to receive the money before 30 June.
Money or assets taken from a private company by a shareholder or their associate can be treated as an unfranked dividend unless handled correctly, for example under a complying loan agreement with minimum yearly repayments. The benchmark interest rate for 2026–27 is 8.77%.
Trustee distribution resolutions generally have to be made by 30 June — see trust tax returns. A capital gain on a sale usually arises when the contract is signed, so the timing of a sale around 30 June matters. From 1 July 2027 the 50% CGT discount for individuals, trusts and partnerships is replaced by cost base indexation (now law).
