How this is calculated

Your taxable salary is your pay converted to a year, minus any salary sacrifice (and minus super if you entered a package). We apply the ATO resident or foreign resident tax rates, the low income tax offset, the 2% Medicare levy (reduced for low incomes), the Medicare levy surcharge if you have no private hospital cover and earn above the threshold, and compulsory HELP repayments. Employer super is the super guarantee of 12% of your ordinary pay, up to the maximum super contribution base.

The pay slip table uses the ATO’s own withholding formulas (Schedule 1, and Schedule 8 for HELP), so it shows what your employer is likely to withhold each week, fortnight or month. The difference between that and your annual tax is your likely refund or bill at tax time. Allowances, overtime, bonuses, fringe benefits, other income and deductions are not included.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my pay slip different from this calculator?

Employers use the ATO tax tables, which spread the tax-free threshold, offsets and Medicare levy evenly over the year and round each pay to the nearest dollar. Allowances, overtime, salary packaging and a Medicare levy variation also change the amount withheld. Your actual tax is worked out when you lodge your tax return.

Should I claim the tax-free threshold?

Usually you claim it from the employer that pays you the most and not from any other job. If you claim it from two employers at once, too little tax is withheld and you may get a tax bill. Foreign residents cannot claim it.

Is super included in my salary?

Many job offers quote a “package” that includes super. From 1 July 2025 your employer must pay super guarantee of 12% of your ordinary time earnings on top of your salary. Choose “Yes — package includes super” above if your offer includes super.

Is salary sacrifice to super worth it?

Salary-sacrificed super is generally taxed at 15% in the fund instead of your marginal tax rate, so it can reduce your total tax. Concessional contributions (employer super plus salary sacrifice) are capped at $30,000 for 2025–26 and $32,500 for 2026–27. Higher earners may pay Division 293 tax. Talk to us before you set it up.
